

With more prodding from him, Valentina confesses that her previous husband, Antonio, was gay. Finally, Valentina erupts at him and in her anger, reveals that she is a virgin. He continues to keep her at arms length – both physically and emotionally – for a good chunk of the story.

But to her surprise, Dante doesn’t want to have sex with her. On their wedding night, Valentina is excited but scared to lose her virginity because she might be forced to expose that her previous marriage was a lie. The book is told through Valentina’s eyes and while she is physically attracted to Dante, she is struck by the fact that he displays little emotion for her. Both of their previous spouses have died: Valentina is ready for a real marriage and Dante wants to put up appearances that he has moved on from his first wife’s death. *Spoilers below* The book begins with Valentina being engaged to Dante Cavallaro, the head of the Chicago mafia.

The hero and heroine communicate more in this book and I liked that Dante, while elusive and hard to read, always seemed to speak honestly to Valentina. Reilly’s previous book in the series, Bound by Honor. She’s determined to get Dante’s attention and desire, even if she can’t get his heart that still belongs to his dead wife. Soon her fear is replaced by confusion and indignation. Valentina is terrified of the wedding night that might reveal her secret, but her worries prove unfounded when Dante shows her the cold shoulder. Dante is only thirty-six but already feared and respected in the Familia, and he’s notorious for always getting what he wants. But now that she’s about to marry Dante, her castle of lies threatens to crash. Even after his death, she kept his secret, not only to preserve the honor of a dead man, but also to protect herself. When she was eighteen, she agreed to marry Antonio in order to hide the truth: that he was gay and in love with an outsider. Valentina lost her husband, too, but her first marriage had always been for show. On the verge of becoming the youngest head in the history of the Chicago mafia, Dante needs a new wife and Valentina was chosen for the role.
